KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL)- A former teacher is charged with assaulting a student in front of other students in his classroom.

“The assault itself involved a teacher shoving a student backwards several feet, the student falling to the floor, and the teacher going over and physically forcing the student back down on the floor,” Tom Patton, spokesperson for the Kingsport Police Department said.
According to police, this incident took place on September 16th in Davenport’s behavior modification classroom.
“Video surveillance from the classroom was reviewed in depth and the teacher was interviewed and the investigation has determined that the teacher assaulted the student in the classroom,” Patton said.
“Mr. Davenport was suspended without pay pending investigation that afternoon, his employment was terminated with the district ended the next day,” Andy True, spokesperson for Kingsport City Schools said.
Davenport resigned the day after the alleged incident.
True said this was Davenport’s first year with the school district.
Davenport was booked in jail on Wednesday and released after making his $1,500 bond. He is set to appear in court January 14th.
Police said the student was not injured.
We talked with Davenport over the phone and asked him if he wanted to talk with us on camera. He declined saying right now he is still in the process of finding a lawyer.FDo
