Emergency personnel found a body in a smoke-filled condominium in Abingdon, Va., early Wednesday morning.
Abingdon police were continuing to investigate the fire as of noon. A town news release said firefighters were called to 804 Wayne Avenue around 8:40 a.m. Wednesday.
“Upon arrival, the condominium was filled with smoke and the single occupant was unable to escape,” according to the release.
A Washington County, Va., Sheriff’s Office deputy was the first person to arrive on scene. He ran into the burning condo, according to WCSO Maj. Bryon Ashbrook, but was overcome by the smoke and had to turn back.
Ashbrook said the deputy was OK.
The body found in the condo was not immediately identified.
The fire did not spread to any nearby structures. Investigators said it started on the ground floor.
