Johnson City man’s bond set at $150,000 after crash kills Piney Flats man

JOHNSON CITY, TN  (WJHL) – A Johnson City man has been charged with vehicular homicide after a two-car crash early Thursday morning. The crash happened around 1:14 a.m. at the intersection of East Watauga Avenue at Center Street in Johnson City.

Johnson City police say a 2015 Volkswagen GTI, driven by 31-year-old Preston Huff, was traveling at a high rate of speed on E. Watauga Avenue and a struck the back of a 2000 Ford Mustang.

Police say the driver of the Mustang, Adam Cates of Piney Flats, died at the scene.

A woman passenger inside the Volkswagen received injuries and was transported to the Johnson City medical center for treatment.

Huff was a arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, aggravated assault and possession of drug equipment.

He was taken to the Washington County Detention Center and is being held on a $150,000 bond. Huff is scheduled to appear in Washington County General Sessions Court on September 18 at 10:30 a.m.

The case is investigated by the police department’s Traffic Homicide Team.
