A man wanted for a double murder out of Florida was taken to jail in Southwest Virginia late Thursday after being stopped following reports he was harassing another driver.
Norton Police Chief James Lane confirmed Friday morning that his officers stopped James Terry Colley Jr., 38, of St. Augustine, FL, just before 10 p.m. Thursday after Wise County dispatch got a call from a woman driving on US 23 North saying another driver was being reckless and had made multiple attempts to stop her and run her off the road.
Officers stopped the alleged harassing driver, later identified as Colley, and found he was wanted out of St. John’s County, FL, for the murder of his wife and her friend earlier Wednesday morning.
The St. John’s County Sheriff’s Office reported on social media that the two victims were found shot to death in a home there. Local schools were locked down after the crime was reported. Norton police found multiple firearms in Colley’s car.
Colley was taken to the Duffield Regional Jail, where he was being held without bond. He was charged locally with DUI, refusal of a chemical test and being a fugitive out of Florida.
Chief Lane said St. John’s deputies were expected to be in Norton on Friday to search and process Colley’s vehicle.
