UNICOI COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – Leaders in the Town of Unicoi said they will consider starting their own police department due to a shortage in Unicoi County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
Unicoi Vice Mayor Doug Hopson said the town pays the sheriff’s office for two deputies to patrol the town, but Sheriff Mike Hensley told Unicoi leaders he does not have the resources to patrol the town anymore.
The news comes as more deputies leave the department amid an insurance dispute.
Deputies said the new policy costs them more than half of their paycheck.
Hopson said the Town of Unicoi leaders discussed using the money they pay for the deputies to hire their own police officer Monday night.
Hopson said they will consult with other law enforcement agencies about training and cost.
