Ft. Bragg paratrooper found dead in barracks

FORT BRAGG, NC (WNCN)  – An 82nd Airborne Division Paratrooper was found unresponsive in his barracks room and died on Saturday.

Private First-Class. Tanner Contla, age 22, of West Linn, Oregon, was an infantryman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, the 82nd Airborne Division
Public Affairs Office said in a statement.

“Pfc. Contla was an outstanding Paratrooper who in a very short time made himself part of the team and earned the reputation of one that could be counted on no matter the situation. His commitment to helping others and positive energy is something that will surely be missed across the battalion,” said Lt. Col. J.C. White, commander of 2nd Bn., 505th PIR.

Contla joined the Army in April 2014. After completion of One Station Unit Training and the Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division in November 2014, the US Army said.

Contla’s awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Parachutist Badge.

He is survived by his parents.

His death is currently under investigation by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command.
