BRISTOL, VA — As summer rolls on, ETSU Men’s Basketball Coach Steve Forbes continues to hit the pavement looking to fill out his team’s future and work with the one he has here in Johnson City.
Recently, we had a chance to chat with another coach who had plenty of success doing that in the SoCon, the legendary Bobby Cremins.
Cremins had success two separate times in the Southern Conference, winning it three times in six years at Appalachian State, then finishing with two titles in six seasons at College of Charleston. Let’s not forget, in between there, he strung together 19 years at Georgia Tech.
We asked him how our new head man would fair in a tough hoops conference, and he likes what he sees.
“I love the Southern Conference, and it’s good to see East Tennessee back in the Southern Conference, but you’ve gotta build your own program, and you gotta have your own expectations,” Cremins said. “Obviously it’s really important to do it the right way. You gotta go out and find some sleepers like Davidson did when they found Stephen Curry.”
While we were at it, we asked Cremins about cutting the college shot clock from 35 to 30 seconds, and he said he’s up in the air. He doesn’t think it’ll make the offense and play selection any better, but he wants to wait and see.
