General: US considering training for Ukrainian army

WASHINGTON (AP) — The commander of U.S. Army forces in Europe says the United States is considering a plan to train Ukrainian army soldiers beginning in late November.

In remarks to reporters at the Pentagon, Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges says the training would be an extension of current U.S. training of Ukrainian national guardsmen, who operate under the Ministry of the Interior and are not front-line combat forces. He says there are approximately 305 U.S. troops currently involved.

Hodges provided few details of the plan, but indicated a U.S. decision would have to come soon to meet the November start date.

The U.S. has provided non-lethal aid to Ukraine, but not lethal arms, in its struggle against Russian-backed separatists.
