Fatal multiple vehicle crash closes Interstate 40 westbound in Sevier County

SEVIERVILLE (WATE) – One person was killed in a multiple vehicle crash on Interstate 40 west at mile marker 409 in Sevier County on Monday morning.

The accident was reported around 10 a.m.

According to Sevierville police, a car swerved off the eastbound highway and hit another vehicle in the westbound lane.

One person was killed, another was trapped in an SUV for about an hour, Sevierville police said.

One person involved in the wreck was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. There is no word on their condition.

Eastbound traffic is not affected. Westbound traffic is being diverted to alternative routes.Traffic on I-40 westbound between mile marker 412 and 409 are being turned around onto I-40 eastbound at mile marker 409.

The accident is expected to be cleared around 2 p.m., according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
