Abingdon man charged with attempted murder

An Abingdon, Va., man was charged Sunday with trying to kill a woman while they were walking on the Virginia Creeper Trail.

Police said Keith A. Robinson, 33, 241 Highland St., Abingdon, was charged with attempted second-degree murder, two counts of assault and battery on a law enforcement officer and obstructing justice Sunday night.

According to a news release, the victim told police Robinson wanted to go for a walk on the Creeper Trail around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. When they were on the trail, the victim said Robinson “grabbed her hair and pulled her neck back in an attempt to cut her throat. The victim escaped and called 911. She was treated for injuries by the Washington County Life-Saving Crew.

Police said Robinson was “combative” when officers found him near A and Court streets around 10:40 p.m. Robinson was placed in handcuffs after several attempts to get him to comply with officer instructions.

A hearing date for Robinson was not immediately available.
