Abingdon Police search for man wanted for first-degree murder

Abingdon, Va. Police Department officers are searching for a man wanted for first-degree murder.

According to an APD news release, police are searching for Joshua Carroll Copeland, 31, 16140 Elementary Drive, is wanted for murder in connection with a death that happened Thursday morning in the 200 block of West Main Street in Abingdon.

Police were dispatched to the Virginia Department of Probation and Parole District 17 parking lot in reference to an unknown medical emergency around 11 a.m.

When they arrived, they found Edsel C. Copeland, 67, 16140 Elementary Drive, in the parking lot with a wound to his chest. Witnesses said Copeland had been assaulted by his son, Joshua Copeland, while on the way to an appointment at the probation office.

Edsel Copeland was taken to Bristol Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Copeland reportedly fled the scene in a 2006 Silver Dodge Charger, license plate number JWN-5305.

Anyone with information about Copeland’s location is asked to call your local police department.
