VSP investigating fatal fire at Castlewood home; victim’s name released

Russell County, Va. emergency responders said a woman died following a fire at Castlewood, Va. home Monday afternoon.

According to a news release, Copper Creek Moccasin Volunteer Fire Department, Russell County Sheriff Office, Lebanon Lifesaving Crew, Castlewood Fire and Rescue, Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department, Emergency Management, Virginia State Police, Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department and Utility Companies, were called to the fire at a home located off of U.S. Highway 58.

A woman, identified as Loida A. Riggs, 39, was inside the home at the time of the fire and died at the scene. Two other people who lived at the residence were not home at the time of the fire.

Foul play is not suspected.

The fire reportedly started in one of the bedrooms of the home.

Emergency management and the Mountain Empire Chapter of the American Red Cross are assisting the family and the Virginia State Police is investigating the incident.
