Complaint investigation into Abingdon nursing home nearing completion

Virginia Department of Health surveyors returned to an Abingdon nursing home last week, roughly two months after opening a complaint investigation into the facility.

The Department of Health’s investigation at Grace Healthcare of Abingdon started back in April, 11 days after the death of a patient at the facility. An Abingdon Police Department spokesperson tells us police are still investigating that April 3rd death. In the meantime, it remains unclear if those two investigations are connected. However, we do know the Department of Health investigation is almost finished. A spokesperson tells us the agency expects to have its statement of deficiencies and plan of correction report ready in another week or so.

Grace Healthcare was previously the subject of a third investigation by the Virginia Department of Social Services. That investigation into an allegation of abuse, neglect or exploitation has concluded and was determined to be unfounded, according to Washington County DSS Director Randall Blevins.

“We have met with them and done some training on our services and requirements for mandated reporting,” Blevins said. “We’ve just offered that as a service to them.”
