The Kingsport Police Officer who suffered a massive stroke back in April is improving.
Public Information Officer, Tom Patton, tells us Jamal Phelps will be moving to a rehabilitation facility in Chicago later this week. At the facility he will undergo extensive physical, and speech therapy.
Patton tells us Phelps is originally from Chicago and will be closer to his family as he continues to recover.
Patton also shared a photo with us that was taken Tuesday at a hospital in Knoxville. He says this photo marked two months since his stroke.
“It is the first time he has actually been outside since the day of his stroke, so two months behind closed doors, in hospital beds, ambulances, and emergency rooms. We don’t know how long his rehabilitation is going to take and what success rate it will have, we are very positive, our prayers are with him, and he is very positive,” said Patton.
So far Patton tells us the community has raised more than $25,000 to help with Phelps and his medical bills.
There will be an indoor rummage sale and car wash on June 20th to help raise additional money for Jamal Phelps.
That sale will be held at Holy Mountain Baptist Church in Kingsport. The event starts at 7am and goes until 4pm that day.
