Abingdon, Va. man to face 12 counts of theft, forgery of checks

ABINGDON, VA (WJHL) – Washington County, Va. Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested an Abingdon man on felony counts of theft and forgery of checks.

According to WCVASO news release, reports of mail being taken from mailboxes, particularly with checks inside, had been coming into the sheriff’s office over the past three weeks.

Around six reports were filed in Washington County, as well as in other jurisdictions.

The suspect, later identified as Jackie C. Cochrane, 63, 16253 Delray Drive, had cashed and attempted to cash a number of checks at local banks totaling around $1,400.

Other checks totaling around $20,000 were found in the suspect’s billfold.

Cochrane was charged with 12 felony counts of theft and forgery of checks.

He was taken to the Southwest Regional Jail in Abingdon, Va., where he was being held without bond.

According to the release, additional charges are pending.

“The suspect has a very extensive criminal record involving forgery, fraud and other similarly related offenses,” Washington County Sheriff Fred Newman said.
