KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (AP) – The final project to widen Interstate 85 between Gastonia and Durham is underway near Kannapolis.
The Independent Tribune of Kannapolis reports that the Department of Transportation began work last month on expanding I-85 from four lanes to eight lanes for nearly 8 miles near Concord and Kannapolis.
Crews currently are strengthening shoulders so they can shift traffic around. The $187 million project includes improving three exits on the stretch and should be finished in summer 2018.
The 8 miles is the final four-lane stretch of I-85 for more than 150 miles through the heart of the state.
Crews say most lane closures and the most disruptive work will take place during the night.
