For the first time since Johnson City started its public art display almost a year ago in and around Founders Park, police responded to the city’s first case of graffiti vandalism involving that art.
Some time between 6:30 Wednesday night and 8:30 Thursday morning, someone sprayed what appears to be either gang-related or ‘wannabe gang-related’ graffiti on the back of the Founders Park sign, according to Mike Williams with the Johnson City Public Works Department.
According to Williams, someone at the nearby cemetery alerted the city to the graffiti Thursday morning. He says the city has asked police for extra patrols around the area. He says the city has also contacted the artist who created the art to find out what crews need to do to remove the graffiti.
