Police pursuit ends with fatal crash in Carter County (Image 1)


Tennessee Highway Patrol said a 17-year-old died and a 23-year-old Robert Alan Cook was injured Thursday night after his car ran off Crabtree Road in Hampton.

The crash happened around 9:45 p.m. 

The 17-year-old’s name was not released. Cook was flown to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment.

THP confirmed the car was stolen and was involved in a police pursuit that originated in Avery County, N.C. and continued across the state line into Carter County.

Charges are pending against Cook.

A police chase that started in Avery County, North Carolina ended with a fatal car crash in Roan Mountain, Tennessee.

Just before 10 p.m. Thursday, a car ran off Crabtree Road, a narrow street that connects with Highway 19-E running parallel to the Doe River.    Wreckage was visible over the side of a steep embankment.

An officer at the scene said a passenger in the car died.  The driver was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.

A Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesman confirmed the fatality and said THP was called in to handle the investigation.

The Carter County Sheriff’s Office also was at the scene of the crash.

As of 11:45pm, it was unclear which agency was pursuing the car that wrecked and why the pursuit started.
