David was born and raised in Kingsport, Tennessee. He graduated from Sullivan Central High School in 1989, where he played football, baseball, and was on the swim team. David entered the Army Reserves after graduation and served his country as a motor transport operator with the 639th Transportation Unit out of Kingsport during Desert Storm in 1991.
He previously worked as a videographer at WKPT in Kingsport, where he says his biggest thrill was covering the Fiesta Bowl in 1998 when Tennessee won the national championship. David was hired on as a videographer at WJHL in February of 1999.
An avid sports fan, his favorite teams are the Tennessee Volunteers, the San Diego Chargers, and St. Louis Cardinals. David married his beautiful, loving wife Cindy on November 3, 2012. He is the proud father of Holly and Jordan McAvoy, and stepfather to Payton, Emily, and Sarah Garland.
