Meghan Gregg hit a walk-off RBI single in the seventh to lift No. 8 Tennessee to a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over No. 9 Florida State in Thursday’s Game 1 of the Knoxville Super Regional.
Tennessee (46-14) scored one run in the fifth and one in the sixth before Gregg’s game-winning hit in the seventh. The Lady Vols have posted four walkoff wins in the month of May. Florida State (48-13) scored runs in the second and the third.
Lexi Overstreet was outstanding in the leadoff spot, going 2-for-2 with two walks and scoring the game-winning run from second base. Gretchen Aucoin had big hits in the fifth and the sixth and scored both times she reached base. Gregg and Shaliyah Geathers each drove in a run.
Gaffin (16-3) earned the win after throwing 2.2 perfect frames in relief and striking out three. Erin Gabriel started the game, throwing 2.1 innings and allowing two runs. Cheyanne Tarango threw two shutout relief innings.
Jessica Burroughs (18-6) took the loss for FSU after allowing three runs over 6.2 innings.
Florida State struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by Victoria Daddis. Ellie Cooper was hit by a pitch to start the inning and three batters later when Daddis drove her in with a one-out RBI double down the left field line.
The Seminoles’ lead grew to 2-0 in the third inning when Jessica Warren hit a one-out solo home run to right field. Tarango relieved UT starter Gabriel in the circle and induced a pair of groundouts to close the inning.
Tennessee pulled to within 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Aucoin got the UT offense going with a leadoff single down the left field line. With runners on the corners and two outs, Aucoin scored from third base on a wild pitch to get UT on the scoreboard. The Lady Vols loaded the bases but Florida State starting pitcher Jessica Burroughs escaped the jam when Gregg popped up to second base.
The Lady Vols tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Geathershit a two-out RBI single up the middle, scoring Aucoin from third base.
In the bottom of the seventh, Overstreet drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a groundout by Gaffin. Gregg sent a 1-2 pitch from Burroughs through the right side and Overstreet raced home for the winning run.
Florida State will be the home team in Game 2 of the Knoxville Super Regional on Friday at 4 p.m. ET on ESPNU. If necessary, Game 3 will be on Friday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and Tennessee will be the home team in that game. Sam Gore and Amanda Freed are on the TV broadcast for both games.
