JCPD warns citizens of home improvement scams

Scam Alert

Johnson City Police Department officers want everyone to be cautious of anyone offering to perform home improvement services at your home.

According to a JCPD news release, police said to be cautious of anyone offering paving, tree cutting/trimming, painting and roofing, especially if they show up unexpectedly.

Police said scammers often go door-to-door, pointing out problems and promising repair work at a good deal.

“The best tip we can offer property owners is to not pay for any work up front,” JCPD Lt. Scotty Carrier said. “Don’t feel pressured or intimidated. A legitimate contractor will understand if you would like to do some research or obtain other estimates.”

According to the release, scammers often want customers to pre-pay for work.

“This happens most commonly to senior citizens,” Carrier said. “The scam artists prey on the vulnerabilities of those who may not be capable of doing the work themselves.”

Carrier said whenever there is doubt about hiring a contractor, don’t do it.

“If you think someone is trying to run a scam in your neighborhood, call 911 so we can determine if they are reputable,” he said.
