Former Holston View Elementary principal pleads not guilty to charges

SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – Attempted child abuse and neglect charges against a former Bristol, Tenn., principal will be heard by a jury later this year.

Jerry Poteat, who was principal at Holston View Elementary School in Bristol, pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempt to commit child abuse and attempt to commit child neglect in Sullivan County Criminal Court this morning.

A grand jury indicted him on those charges this past week. Not much detail was available on the charges but the grand jury presentment read in part “Jerry Poteat… did unlawfully and knowingly, other than by accidental means, attempt to treat… a child under eight (8) years of age in a manner so as to attempt to adversely affect the child’s health and welfare.”

The incident in question occurred Jan. 27. Bristol police started investigating in February. Evidence in the case was then turned over the grand jury.

Poteat’s trial was scheduled for October 26.

Poteat was suspended without pay from his job at the school system.
