BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — After a dominant weekend in which No. 11 Tennessee went 5-0 with four run-rule victories, freshman shortstop Meghan Gregg has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, as announced by the Southeastern Conference on Monday.
Gregg enjoyed a breakout week at the plate to lead Tennessee (16-3) to a 5-0 record in the Tennessee Invitational, hitting .688 (11-for-16) with four homers, two doubles, 13 RBIs, six runs, a 1.563 slugging percentage and a .611 on-base mark. She had five multi-RBI games and four multi-hit games including three games with three RBIs. Gregg came through in clutch moments for UT this week, with a pair of game-winning extra-base hits. She had two home runs, including a walk-off in UT’s 5-4 win over Northern Iowa on March 7. She also had the game-winning two-RBI double to give Tennessee the win by run rule (8-0, 5 innings) over Purdue on March 8. The five-game hitting streak she established this week is her career long.
Gregg is the first Tennessee player to earn conference weekly honors this season and this week’s honor marks the 13th time a UT rookie has won the award. The Williamson, Ga., native is UT’s first SEC Freshman of the Week since Annie Aldrete earned that honor on March 31, 2014. Aldrete was SEC Freshman of the Week twice last season.
On the season, Gregg is hitting .327 with five homers, three doubles, one triple, 19 RBIs and 14 runs.
UT takes on Illinois State in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 10, starting at 5 p.m. ET at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. WNML Sports Radio will have live audio for the game with Brian Rice on the call on 990 AM and fans can also listen live online at
