A delivery truck driver faces charges after a crash that killed a bicyclist, who was a member of the Sarasota Ballet.

Sarasota Police say it happened at about 2 p.m. on Wednesday June 4.

Sarasota Ballet member Pedro Pupa, 20, of Brazil, was riding a bicycle in the 5400 block of Bay Shore Road.

A large delivery truck, driven by Willie G. Burns, 58, of Tampa, was making a right onto a service entrance road leading into the Ringling Museum.

Investigators say the delivery truck pulled in front of Pupa as he was approaching the road and failed to see Pupa or the bicycle.

Pupa’s bicycle hit the side of the delivery truck and Pupa was injured. He was transported to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton where he died from his injuries Wednesday evening, according to Sarasota Police.

The Sarasota arts community is mourning Pupa’s passing.
