A man convicted of child rape and aggravated sexual battery back in 1994 was sentenced to 180 days in jail and fined $600, after he reportedly did not report to the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry for more than a year.

Billy Wayne Spears, 40, was sentenced Wednesday and once he is released from the Hawkins County Jail, he will serve nearly a year on probation.

As part of a plea agreement, the charge of violation of the sex offender registry was reduced to attempted violation.

A man classified as a violent sex offender was arrested this week after deputies say he failed to report to the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry for more than a year.

The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office says Billy Wayne Spears, 40, had been in jail recently, but was supposed to report his status when he was released.

He was arrested Monday on Whitehorn Road in Bulls Gap, TN and charged with violation of Tennessee Sex Offender Registry.

In 1994, Spears was convicted of rape of a child and aggravated sexual battery in Hawkins County.

He was classified as a violent sex offender as a result of those charges.

Spears is supposed to report quarterly in March, June, September and December of each year – but has not reported since May 23, 2013.
