Elizabethton leaders consider de-funding Carter County Tomorrow

CARTER COUNTY, TN (WJHL) –  As local cities and counties try everything to bring in jobs, leaders in one city are considering de-funding its economic development agency. Some on the Elizabethton city council said Carter County Tomorrow isn’t getting results.

Last week, Elizabethton’s city budget failed to get enough votes of support after 2 city councilman tried unsuccessfully to add an amendment that would remove funding for the economic development agency.

But last week, two of Elizabethton’s city councilmen voted to pull all city funding from Carter County Tomorrow after an unsuccessful budget amendment that caused the spending plan to fail on first reading.
“We had a couple of council members that have questioned the results that that organization has achieved over the last several years,” said Elizabethton City Mayor Curt Alexander.
More than $130,00 comes from city and county taxpayers. $94,000 of that comes from Elizabethton Mayor Curt Alexander helped defeat the de-funding amendment.
He he understands why some want more bang for their buck.
“I can’t really say that tom is not doing his job or not doing it the right way but the results according to council are not what they want to see,” said Alexander,”you definitely don’t want to de-fund economical development. The dollars and cents really aren’t what’s at stake here. It’s taking that money and utilizing it in the most effective manner.”
Anderson says there’s a misunderstanding.
“What they need to do is understand what we are doing. If we do need to restructure and we need to refocus we will allow them to be apart of that strategic planning,” said Anderson.
So instead of rolling the whole thing up Anderson says he’s ready to get to work.
