HAWKINS COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – Wednesday, Trevor Burton appeared in court for his arraignment. The judge set his preliminary hearing date for December 9th, 2013. Burton is being held without bond.
The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Department says Trevor Burton is facing three counts of attempted first degree murder, after he fired a gun at three officers Thursday night.
Officers originally thought Burton had been shot when they exchanged gunfire with him, but now say he did he did not suffer any gun shot wounds. They now believe he may have been injured while running through the woods. They say he did not need any medical attention.
The sheriff’s office is now in charge of the investigation, with help from the TBI.
Hawkins County authorities say they have located and arrested the man who engaged in gun fire with law enforcement Thursday night before running into nearby woods.
Thursday evening around 8:40p.m. authorities responded to a call of gunshots coming from the home of 44-year old Trevor Burton in the Caney Creek area in Rogersville.
When authorities arrived, Burton and local law enforcement exchanged gun fire before an officer shot Burton and he disappeared into a heavily wooded area behind his home with his gun.
A SWAT team and an armored personal carrier (a tank-like vehicle) were dispatched to the scene to search the area.
Officers were stationed at Burton’s house for hours until he returned home early Friday morning around 4:20a.m. to take him into custody.
Burton received a non-life threatening gun shot wound and no one else was hurt in the incident.
The case is being transferred over to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation because it was an officer involved shooting.
Authorities are not saying what sparked the shooting but they can confirm alcohol did play a role.
